Introduction and Research

Updated: Jan 8, 2019

This post is the initial stage of research for my Master's project at the London College of fashion.

I started my research with evaluating and researching what other people have already said about nudity. Here is a small segment of my research. It is merely the start of it and has much more stories.

Undressing and Nude subjects were part of visual arts but not poetry and literature. Greeks are said to be the first people to discover how to realistically portray and “improve” the human body in art.

“The female body on itself is the most familiar, yet enigmatic, of things. Our vision

artifice as by ‘nature’” ( Ritwick Sarkar, Jes- sica Yun, 2000) Those curves: What exactly do they mean? Why did we encourage them? This project, therefore, focuses on the female body as a masterpiece of design and how clothing complements that beautiful terrain, shape, meaning and influence of the superficialities It aims to consider the actions that lie between dress and nakedness.

Natural beauty, Farber Nudes by Arnold Newman, 1999

Throughout history, beautiful undressed girls have graced the walls of churches, palaces, galleries, and private homes. These women have been presented in all manner of art forms, from paintings, sculptures, and tapestries to photographs and films. The list goes on. We have gazed upon the female form in thousands of poses and positions, Depicting nudes, particularly women, has been a preoccupation of artists since earliest times.

Nudity is the simplest and primal gesture.

Many of her photographs show women, naked or clothed, mostly blurred due to movement and long exposure times of camer, merging with their surroundings, or whose faces are obscured.

The female form has always offered end less inspiration. Since the inception of photography a new way of interpreting the human form has developed., significantly increasing the interest and variety of this unique art form. Today around 40% of artworks around the galleries about wom- en are nudes or semi-nudes. Nudity is the most primal and straightforward gesture, yet it talks so much. Using nudity in con- junction with clothing to show in a way that focuses attention on the figure and not oth-

er irrelevant details of apparel is the prime focus of the process.

Clothing being one of our basic need to cover yourself is not just covering today, it communicates our bodies. It is so sensitive that even a simple thread around enhances it differently. Integration of nudity in the as- pect of clothing increase awareness about beauty in forms. Along with the improve ment of a structure, undressing is also a vital step in the substitution of one identity for another.

The project begins by differentiating the state of being undressed from the act of undressing. Undressing is a gesture - an active and purposeful event, whereas nakedness is a passive state of being. Asa dynamic gesture, undressing can involve more agency than nudity. It anticipates nakedness, and it is in that anticipation that undressing holds its power. Undressing takes the body on a journey, beginning in one place and ending in another.
